& Air Conditioning Contractors? I Don't Blame You.

Some of my competitors love to brag about how many hours their employees spend in training each year. What they don't tell you is that the training is more often about sales and closing tactics than it is about the technology of the trades.

Most have just one thing to say about a system that is getting on in years: "REPLACE IT!" What they don't tell you is that:

  • If your heating/cooling equipment had been installed properly it would last far longer than it will now, or that if that poor installation is corrected, it may still give you years of efficient service and comfort even better than when it was brand new.
  • The high energy bills and spotty comfort that you're now experiencing may have less to do with the equipment itself than with its installation, with leaking ductwork or with other air leaks in your home's envelope.
  • Your water heater has an "anode rod" which if replaced in time may as much as double its life.

Some will offer giant rebates on what turns out to be the "highest efficiency" most expensive equipment in their catalog. What they don't tell you is that you may NEVER recoup that investment in the time you plan to remain in your home and that even today's "lowest efficiency" replacement is likely far more efficient than the equipment in your home -- especially when it's properly installed.

Others offer a price far lower than anyone else's. What they don't tell you is that in order to get there, they have to cut corners. First among them is their failure to measure and calculate the proper size of the replacement and the proper ductwork configurations for its installation. They simply swap out the old for new equipment of similar size without ever determining if that was the right choice in the first place.

Still some give away "FREE Tune-ups." What they don't tell you is that those appointments are less about improving the efficiency and comfort of your system than they are about giving them another shot at a high-pressure replacement sale.
